Mulch is a natural or artificial layer of plant materials such as pine needles, tree bark, shredded hard wood, that covers the land surface and helps to hold moisture in the soil, protect soil from erosion, aid in establishing plant cover, and minimizes temperature fluctuations of the underlying soil.
